In Howiek a family line with the surname HOBBIE has its origin. The name HOBBIE is also used by the descendants of several other lines. Howiek lies about 1 km southeast of Ocholt, 7 km southwest of Westerstede and is today part of the municipality Westerstede.
The place Howiek is mentioned already on 30 March 1302, when the Apen miners Herbord and Gerhard transferred the farm „Habbonis in Howich (Hauwiek)“ to the monastery Rastede. It remains unclear whether this is the only „Tammelen hus“ in Howiek mentioned in 1428 in the tax register, which at that time was still attributed to the Torsholt peasantry, or the parent house of the „HOBBEN from OCHOLT“ in Ocholt in the direction to Howiek.
In the Mannzahlregister (defence recruitment register) of 1581 the three farmers Johan to Howick, Gerdt to Howick and Oltman to Howick are named under Ocholt after Johann HOBBEN (the latter see under Ocholt). According to this there were only three farms in Howiek at the end of the 16th century and a family name did not seem to be necessary yet. In the Mannzahlregister Johan with two fortified sons as well as Gerdt and Oltman with two fortified servants each. In the Mannzahlregister of 1632 an Oltmann is named HOBBY, who must have been a son of Oltman to Howiek. Between about 1610 and 1630 the three Hausmann families „zu Howiek“ had adopted different surnames in order to be able to assign their children with often same first names better. Oltman probably chose the surname HOBBY because his father was a descendant of the HOBBIE families from Torsholt (3 km northeast) or Apen (6 km west-southwest). This assumption is supported by the preference of the first name „Dierk“ or „Dirich“ at the baptisms of the descendants, which was already common before in Apen and Torsholt. But if one considers all three early first names being frequent in the lineage „HOBBIE from Howiek“, these are Oltmann (from approx. 1550), Dierk (from 1645) and Brunke (from 1676), then the lineage „HOBBIE from Hollwege“ is the only lineage in which all three names were preferred even before 1650. According to this, a descent of the Howieker HOBBIE families from Hollwege 8.5 km north would also be possible. However, this will probably not be proven anymore.
The following picture shows the location of the parent house of the families „HOBBIE from Howiek“ in today’s situation.
In the following the families „HOBBIE from Howiek“ are genealogically described.
The families „HOBBIE from Howiek“ until around 1920
The spelling of the names mainly follows the baptismal registers and documents. The German names for farmers and farm hands are retained and are to be interpreted as follows:
„Hausmann“ = farmer with a long-established hereditary farm, first settlers in a village,
„Köter“ = farmer with a smaller, later founded farm,
„Halbköter, Viertelköter“ = Köter with less land,
„Brinksitzer“ = small farmer on the outskirts of the village,
„Anbauer“ = farmer on newly cultivated land,
„Grundheuermann“ = farm hand with own house on non-inherent land,
„Heuermann, Heuerling“ = farm hand without own house,
„Häusling“ = person without own house,
„Dienstknecht, Knecht“ = farm hand.

He is the currently secured top ancestor of the families „HOBBIE from Howiek“ and for the first time named 1581 in the Mannzahlregister of Westerstede, also still 1608. Since his son Oltman calls himself HOBBY, he will probably – as explained above – have been a later born son of one of the older families named „Hobbie“ from Hollwege, Torsholt or Apen, which can probably no longer be proven with certainty.
