The families „HOBBIESIEFKEN from Linswege“ until around 1920
The surname of the HOBBIESIEFKEN families was repeatedly written as HOBJESIEFKEN (from about 1850), also as HOBBENSIEFKEN (from 1750) and has been partly preserved until today. However, the place of origin of most HOBBENSIEFKEN is Westerloy.
As „Lynsvidon“ already 1124 documentary mentioned, there 1428 in a tax list the about 1400 born free heredity farmer Teyleke HOBBING is listed. More details under „Linswege„.
The great-grandson of this progenitorTeyleke HOBBING, the farm heir Johan HOBBING (*about 1495) had a later-born son named Sieveke HOBBING (about 1540-about 1635). He was listed 1581 in the Westersteder defence recruitment register as Köter (small farmer). In the so-called Weinkaufregister (recording of all legal contracts) for 1623-1639 on page 35 under „Linsswegenn“ (probably in the year 1635) is noted: „Hobbie Sieveken has reached his age on one hundred years. Has deceased and his son Gerth is supposed to sell the Coederey with 2 1/2 Reichsthaler“.
The Köter son Gerth HOBBIE (*about 1570) had again a later son named Siefke HOBBI (about 1600-1674), who is noted in the defence recruitment register of 1635 as „sick“. He is thus the 7th generation, starting from Teyleke HOBBING (*around 1400 Linswege). He called himself HOBBI SIEVEKEN after marriage and thus became the eponym of the line „HOBBIESIEFKEN from Linswege“. Although not directly documented so far, he is to be regarded as a fourfold great-grandson of this top ancestor of the „HOBBIE aus Linswege“ families.
The spelling of the names mainly follows the baptismal registers and documents. The German names for farmers and farm hands are retained and are to be interpreted as follows:
„Hausmann“ = farmer with a long-established hereditary farm, first settlers in a village,
„Köter“ = farmer with a smaller, later founded farm,
„Halbköter, Viertelköter“ = Köter with less land,
„Brinksitzer“ = small farmer on the outskirts of the village,
„Anbauer“ = farmer on newly cultivated land,
„Grundheuermann“ = farm hand with own house on non-inherent land,
„Heuermann, Heuerling“ = farm hand without own house,
„Häusling“ = person without own house,
„Dienstknecht, Knecht“ = farm hand.
