The village of Bokel lies about 3 km southeast of Wiefelstede and is today part of the municipality of Wiefelstede. About 1.5 km northeast of Bokel, in the direction of Rastede, lay the first 1531 mentioned „Bokelerborch“, a ring wall complex built around 850 AD.
The earliest mention of the family name HOBBIE in Bokel can be found in a register from 1634, in which the Köter Johann HOBBIE is mentioned with a tax of 1 Reichstaler and 18 Grote. In the Mannzahlregister (defence recruitment register) of 1581 and in the register of the „Fräuleinsteuer“ of 1613 he is not yet listed. In an old chronicle it says: „In the year 1650 the Almighty God let see his breeding rod in the municipality Rastede, and the penitential bell was rung. The old miller Johann Hobbie from Bokel died of the plague“. According to Wiefelsteder’s church book, he was buried on 7 January 1650. Thus, he will have lived in the Köterei belonging to the mill. The following picture shows the situation of the present situation.
The following Oldenburg Vogteikarte shows to scale the location of the mill-Köterei, mill and the settlement of Bokel around 1797.
The families „HOBBIE from Bokel“ until around 1920
The spelling of the names mainly follows the baptismal registers and documents. Also in the Rasteder church books the Low German spelling „Hobje“ is preferred repeatedly, among other things by Pastor Anton Maes from 1701 to 1740. The German names for farmers and farm hands are retained and are to be interpreted as follows:
„Hausmann, Meier“ = farmer with a long-established hereditary farm, one of the first settlers in a village,
„Köter“ = farmer with a smaller, later founded farm,
„Altköter“ = Köter on an early founded Köterei,
„Halbköter, Viertelköter“ = Köter with less land,
„Brinksitzer“ = small farmer on the outskirts of the village,
„Anbauer“ = farmer on newly cultivated land,
„Grundheuermann“ = farm hand with own house on non-inherent land,
„Heuermann, Heuerling“ = farm hand without own house,
„Häusling“ = person without own house,
„Dienstknecht, Knecht“ = farm hand.
